These sessions are for those participants who would like to analyze their own 3D data (we will provide data to those who do not have it). The final third of the workshop will be practical sessions in which you can work on your own project with the guidance of the speakers. Another third of the presentations will be tutorials illustrating the capabilities and uses of DREAM.3D. Roughly one third of the presentations will be about state of the art 3D materials research. The workshop will consist of three types of presentations. Both of these tools run on all standard computers. The package is tightly integrated with ParaView, which is a freely available visualization software tool. Participants in the workshop will learn how to use DREAM.3D, which is a freely available software package that performs a wide range of functions for reconstructions of 3D microstructures, statistical analysis and generation of representative volume elements. A particular focus of the workshop is on 3D orientation maps, constructed from EBSD serial sections, transmission X-ray measurements, or synthetic microstructures. The workshop is intended for researchers at all levels and will combine presentations on 3D microstructure science as well as practical presentations on the tools and methods for reconstructing, analyzing and synthesizing 3D microstructures. The Materials Science & Engineering Department of Carnegie Mellon University will host a workshop on 3D Microstructures August 16-18, 2023, in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Bluequartz Software. The 2024 workshop will be held August 14th through 16th, 2024, at Carnegie Mellon. Thank you to the 63 registered participants and all the presenters. ![]() 2023 Workshop on Methods for Three-Dimensional Microstructure StudiesĬarnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA The waist visually shows microstructure that is orientated exactly in the direction of the microstructure visualization.
